Collecting data is a fundamental need of any organization. The technology behind data collection has gone through a number of different phases. The process of gathering data was relatively simple when paper forms ruled the world. The hard part came in actually doing something with the data after it was trapped on a piece of paper. The usual process was to hire an army of people to sift through the papers and file them. If a head honcho needed a report on the data, then the army would have to spend weeks or months going through every piece of paper to count and track the data. The (eventual) result was a report.
