Chapter 5

Signal generation and transmitters

Abstract

In this chapter the basic transmitter building blocks are described. They include the oscillator, modulator, RF amplifier, and antenna. We discuss advantages and tradeoffs between LC, SAW resonator and crystal control, then examine frequency generation using frequency synthesizers and direct digital synthesis. First are described the basic concepts of generating integer multiples of an oscillator frequency using a phase lock loop, voltage (or current) controlled oscillator and a digital divider. Then we explain the dual modulus prescaler and the fractional-N synthesizer, followed by another approach based on direct digital synthesis. Also covered are the methods and ASK and FSK modulation ...
