The U.S. economy is divided into three broad categories: agriculture (which includes mining, construction, and utilities), manufacturing, and service. The evolution of human resources (HR) has paralleled the changes to these sectors over the last several decades. As shown in the accompanying graphic, the service sector now makes up around 70 percent of the U.S. economy, with manufacturing second and agriculture a distant third.
