During a visit home to Tione di Trento, Italy, a few years ago, I started a new after-dinner routine: watching the TV show Affari Tuoi (translated literally, “Your Business”) with my family. Before each episode, an independent notary company randomly assigns monetary prizes and nonmonetary ones (such as a cork or a one-year supply of soap) to twenty boxes.
