16  Sensors and Transducers

The difference between sensors and transducers is simply that a transducer has the capability to produce the wave it senses. In this chapter, we examine the link between the signals one measures and the physical wave or energy that is being measured by a sensor, or generated by an actuator. We must also consider the signal conditioning and transmission from the sensor in order to properly characterize the signal information and background noise. Sensor signals are processed in all sorts of different ways before the voltages ever get to the data acquisition electronics and it can be very important to understand the physics of the signal chain to obtain the correct signal and noise estimates.
