The roots of the characteristic equation |λ_{i}**I**−**A**| = 0 are called the Eigen values of the matrix **A**(*n* × *n*).

The *n* × 1 vector *p*_{i} that satisfies the matrix equation |λ_{i} **I**−**A**| *p*_{i} = 0 is called eigen vector of **A**(*n* × *n*) associated with the eigen value of λ_{i} where λ_{i} is the Eigen value of **A**.
