Abstract
After excessive early enthusiasm for silicon photonics, the technology is now on a solid course with companies bringing products to market. There are already several product success stories, but further development is needed for silicon photonics to become established in the marketplace and that requires revenues. One emerging revenue-making opportunity is 100 Gb/s optical interconnect for the data center. However, this market opportunity alone will be insufficient to launch silicon photonics into the mainstream; very few suppliers will benefit significantly from the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues that the 100-Gb interconnect market will generate.
