Abstract

The relentless growth in traffic is presenting designers with the challenge of impending network capacity exhaust. Network operators have experienced a continual reduction in the cost of optical transport, measured in cost per transported bit. But with network traffic now filling fibers, this cost will rise. Internet content providers, experiencing the fastest traffic growth as a consequence of their large-scale data centers, are set to meet this challenge first.
