We are all under pressure—pressure to perform, pressure to conform to a culture, and pressure to listen to others. There is no doubt that advice is critical to success. However, it’s not just advice that is critical; it’s advice from the right people at the right time. Let’s be honest, advice people give is based on other people’s preferences and their priorities. If you don’t keep that on top of your mind, things can go terribly wrong. What has been evident to me through the years is that people get some really bad advice at some really bad times. Why is this? It’s because people in need tend to go with solutions based on who they like rather than who has expertise.
