Around the time of my tenth birthday I became incredibly nervous and my self-esteem plummeted. It was partly connected to my parents' splitting up but also to the onset of that painful part of our lives as we morph into adolescence. I suddenly became aware that I wasn't funny; certainly not as funny as the other kids in school. I wasn't particularly eloquent, to my own ear. I never sounded clever and, most pointedly, I really didn't want to be noticed. I had learned to love the shadows, it was safer there.

I was surrounded by confident people, or so it seemed; this, of course, just made it worse.
