Chapter 1. Overview

Business strategy is the process of developing strategy for a single, largely self-contained business. The business unit could be a whole company if it is small or medium-sized (or even in a large company focused on a single line of business), or a separate, largely autonomous part of a larger company, comprising a profit centre that has its own set of external customers and competitors (often called an SBU, ‘strategic business unit, or ‘business unit’, or ‘business’ – we will generally use one of the two latter terms).
