Chapter 3

Credibility in Modeling and Simulation 1

Simulation is only useful if the results it provides are representative of the behavior of the system being simulated. This raises issues of verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A), which allow us to guarantee the reliability and credibility of the results obtained. This chapter is dedicated to these questions and concentrates on simulations used at the beginning of the engineering cycle, during the analysis of concepts and the definition of preliminary architectures; examples of technico-operational simulations in the context of national defense will be used as a framework for illustration.

3.1. Technico-operational studies and simulations

In the context of design and preparation of future defense systems, the DGA and General Staff use a strategic approach based on wide reflection and long-term forecasting (up to 30 years). This forecasting work orients future weapons programs from the preparation phase, which precedes the introduction of new products up to the point where the product is retired from service. In this approach, technico-operational studies are widely used to assist in the choice and decision-making process. Their aid is particularly precious when seeking the best compromise between operational characteristics, technical specifications, and associated costs in future systems or in updates to existing systems.

Technico-operational studies are best used during the preparation stage before a weapons system ...
