Working with multiple sites

Sitecore is capable of allowing multiple different websites in a single installation, though the basic Sitecore installation contains only one physical website (a Sitecore instance) and contains a few virtual websites (managed by Sitecore internally) such as shell, login, admin, website, scheduler, system, and publisher.

The website definitions, including their properties, are defined in Sitecore.config. The site resolver determines the incoming HTTP requests and assigns an appropriate site based on the defined hostname.
