Combining the Power of Lean and Six Sigma
In many organizations, Six Sigma is implemented with Lean under the name Lean Six Sigma or simply Lean Sigma. Foundations of Lean principles can be traced back to Toyota Production System (TPS).
The objective of Lean is to increase process speed and reduce invested capital by reducing waste. We strive for one piece at a time, synchronized flow, pull system, and eliminate waste in the value stream. The aim of Six Sigma, on the other hand, is to reduce variation. Variation has a strong impact on the speed of the process. The greater the variation, the slower will be the process. Processes with lesser variation tend to run faster.
