A softbox is a box of light, contained and controllable. It has direction and punch, as opposed to the umbrella’s scatter and forgiveness.
There are a number of small-flash softboxes out on the market, but the Lastolite 24″ Ezybox Hotshoe softbox is pretty much a go-to model. Very popular, with good reason. It folds down tight, and stuffs pretty handily into a small bag. You can then clip it or shove it quite easily into just about any duffel or case you might take on location with you.
