The Bar

Why is it that I intuitively know how to light a bar so well? What does that say about me? Hmmm....

Best not to speculate. Jake, my coffee-drinking subject, is a great guy, with a rakish, wonderful look. I sat him at the bar, and then just lit around him. Your subject is the center of gravity in the picture. All your efforts to light the image revolve around what’s necessary to show the reader his—the subject’s—world.

Main light first. Easy, as in Ezybox Hotshoe softbox. Twenty-four incher, white interior. Shaped, but soft, and forgiving enough to just squeak some detail under the brim of that hat. Bring in a TriFlip as a warm, reflective fill board. Done—for the subject.
