With our focus on sketches and sketching, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that they represent only part of a much richer ecology of drawing and rendering types.

Trying to understand their place in this larger space is not always easy. This is complicated by the fact that, as with many things, there is more than one way that sketches can be categorized. For example, they can be grouped according to profession (architect, industrial design, fashion, graphic design, fine art, etc.), medium (pencil, markers, pastel, pen and ink, airbrush, etc.), or subject (life drawing, automobiles, buildings, nature, etc.).
