Experimenting with Change—Together

At the outset of our experiment, even those who longed for change never thought it would happen. So ingrained was the notion that the nature of management consulting was unpredictable and therefore required a 24/7, always-on work ethic, that those who could not sustain that lifestyle assumed that they had no alternative but to leave the consulting industry.

Within six months after PTO became a Boston office initiative, when ten case teams had participated and five more were starting up, team members we interviewed about their experiences kept echoing one word: change.
