Member Task Roles

I mentioned in earlier chapters that research from over 60 years ago (Benne & Sheats, 1948) is still valid and still used today in terms of the roles members play in groups. The three types of roles identified are task, maintenance, and individual or self-centered. Task roles help groups accomplish goals, maintenance roles promote social support and positive relationships among members and self-centered roles promote individual goals and may work against the accomplishment of group goals.
