Ethical Guidelines for Decision-Making Groups

Numerous scholars have discussed the ethical issues that arise in decision-making and problem-solving groups. Bormann (1981; 1990) urged the following eight ethical guidelines for small group discussion groups:

1.   allowing making decisions without being coerced or manipulated

2.   encouraging development of individual potential

3.   using sound reasoning and relevant value judgments

4.   avoiding conflicts focused on personal issues rather than on ideas

5.   avoiding manipulating other members by selfish interest

6.   being fair and accurate in presentation of information

7.   communicating with each other as they would want others to communicate with them

8.   using ethical criteria to judge group ...
