Chapter Six

Permitting

Meeting the Institutional Issues for Installing a Small Wind Machine

Abstract

At all levels of government, zoning, permitting, and inspection regulations are in place to ensure the safety of structures. Permits provide a minimum standard for construction so that lives are protected. Because small wind machines contain so many different technologies, several permits and inspections are often required, making the approval process, although necessary, seem insurmountable. Towers, foundations, and electrical wiring are usually covered under building permits, while noise and height restrictions often require special use permits. For grid-tied systems, a utility interconnection permit is required.
