Abstract

A smart irrigation system is a technology-driven approach to manage irrigation in agricultural or landscaping applications. To maximize water use and make sure plants get the proper quantity of water at the right time, it entails integrating sensors, data analytics, and automation. An increase in population growth and a high demand in food lead to overall requirements of water resources since agriculture consumes 85% of the world’s available freshwater resources, and this will continue to rule water usage as the world’s population grows and food demand rises. For sustainability of water, there is a need to develop strategies encompassing technological, agronomic, managerial, and institutional improvements. There are several water-saving solutions available, ranging from simple to highly complicated. Traditional irrigation methods can be automated using various sensors and controllers. These automated methods not only saves water but can monitor water flow as well. In this chapter, an author explores various smart irrigation techniques. This chapter also covers the usage of different sensors and controllers. This paper aims to perform a thorough analysis of the existing research on intelligent irrigation systems. It will be focused on systems that employ artificial intelligence methods in both urban and rural agriculture ...
