Cities reflect the times and conditions in which people live. Today, technology is playing a central role in almost every aspect of the human experience. Municipalities are becoming more technology-enabled not only because of efficiencies and better outcomes but also because people have come to expect that cities will use and deploy solutions that mirror experiences in other areas of life. If you can fill in some basic information and then click a button to snag a table reservation at your favorite restaurant, you will probably eventually expect to do the same when requesting a building permit. If you can visit your doctor via telemedicine, you’ll likely expect to be able to attend a public meeting over your smartphone as well.
