STUCK IN THEMIDDLE

When Karen Cordaway was twenty-nine and pregnant with her second daughter, her mom got sick—really sick. She was terminally ill with carcinoma meningitis. Karen, who was working part-time as a substitute teacher and tutor at the time, scaled back her work schedule drastically and called on friends to care for her two-year-old so that she could be by her mom’s side. She handled all the logistics of her mom’s care, including decisions about treatments. “It was just a matter of time,” she recalls.
