If we define cultures as networks of knowledge shared by groups of people (Hong, 2009), then maintaining cultural coherence depends on technologies — for example, books, maps, Web sites, and telephones — that help perpetuate networks. Because physical distance is a significant barrier to holding these networks together, people have used technologies to bridge those distances since the invention of the shoe.
