Chapter 3. Set the course

Elisabeth Marx and Steve Tappin, from the executive search firm, Heidrick & Struggles, could not be more blunt about it: ‘Progression to a senior business role requires the ability to operate strategically: to develop a helicopter view and think in the long term.’ Yet, they quickly amend this point of view; we suspect that’s because they both know – having recruited dozens of high-powered corporate leaders – that just having a big vision of where a business needs to be is much like the football coach who only knows where the goal is located at his team’s end of the field. That’s not nearly enough. Finding the way to get your team to score is what top coaching jobs are all about.
