In This Chapter

  • iCal Server Utility

  • Server Monitor

  • RAID Admin

  • System Image Utility

  • Command-line tools

Apple supplies a variety of server administration tools that ship with Mac OS X Server on the installation DVD within the Other Installs folder:

  • Server Admin is used for enabling and configuring services on the server and managing access to them.

  • Workgroup Manager is supplied for working with both local accounts and network-accessible directory domain user, group, and computer account records. It's also used for assigning managed preferences to these accounts.

  • iCal Server Utility is used to manage global contact information stored in Open Directory. Prior to Snow Leopard, this application was named Directory.app (not to be confused with Directory Utility).

  • Server Monitor is used to monitor the status of Xserve hardware that supports various reporting sensors and, on Xserve (late 2006) models or later, supports Lights-Out Management.

  • RAID Admin is used to administer the now-discontinued Xserve RAID appliance.

  • System Image Utility is used to create NetBoot, NetRestore, and NetInstall images for network delivery to client machines.

  • Command-line tools provide access to the features of Apple's supplied graphical administration applications from Terminal or a remote shell, allowing for remote access administration and configuration by using SSH and the creation of scripted tasks that can be run on a schedule.
