Today many organizations run their business on systems that run across multiple heterogeneous environments. This poses interoperability issues and other such difficulties.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) are two terms used regularly within the IT industry today in regard to providing a solution to those difficulties. Indeed, they are two of the hottest current buzzwords. Unfortunately, when people refer to these terms, they often do not have a full understanding of their true meaning and what they are, or of the value proposal for implementing them within the business.
