Data, the Missing Link
Any number and types of services can be enabled within the SOA architecture. These services, their definitions, and their interactions can vary. Those that are most common include business services, functional services (which can include behavioral and utility services), and data services. The general notion of a service often appears to be application centric. However, data sits at the core of most services and is critical to SOA. These services can also be exposed as Web services, which provide a number of interoperability and loose coupling advantages. The key to which is the Web service interface.
