A

AddThis: A service that provides a social sharing button placed on websites and blogs through a supplied code (see Figure G-1). By placing this button (built into many blogging services) on your page, you allow visitors to share your content on over 300 other social sites. AddThis (www.addthis.com) also supplies analytics so you know which of your content is shared and where it’s shared.

AdSense: The Google system of advertising for blogs and websites. As a subscriber to the service, you can agree to insert Google ads and earn revenue from the users who view or click the ads. The ads are targeted to the keywords in your content.

algorithm: A set of calculations developed for a computer to perform its functions. Algorithms are critical in social media for developing content-sharing strategies.

app: Short for application, a piece of software that performs a specific function. Apps can run on your computer, a web browser, the Internet, or on your smartphone or tablet.

Application Programming Interface (API): A documented interface that allows one software application to interact with another application or website.

astroturfing: To create the impression of support or popularity by paying individuals to promote and create buzz for a brand by posting on blogs, liking, or sharing content.
