In this method of detecting faults, a component, acting as a system monitor, sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request to another component (it pings the component) and waits for an ICMP echo reply. If the target does not respond to the ping in a predefined amount of time, the component acting as the system monitor reports that the other component has failed.
