Setting the stage
A small commercial software firm specializing in applications software security won a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program Phase I contract from a defense agency about ten months ago to validate algorithms that detected and protected software binaries against reverse engineering attacks. The SBIR program1 fosters commercialization of products that government agencies need through a three-phase program. Phase I validates feasibility. Phase II is aimed at proof of concept, while Phase III pursues commercialization with private sector support.
