Setting Up the Environment

In the previous chapters, we introduced the OpenFlow switch and controllers, and in this chapter, we will complete and set up the infrastructure and environment for network application (Net App) development. We start with our OpenFlow laboratory based on Mininet and remote OpenFlow controllers (POX), and then we introduce the OpenDaylight (ODL) project and its bootstrap project ODL controller as a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller platform (with OpenFlow support) that can be used for our Net App development.

Specifically, we will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding the OpenFlow laboratory
  • ODL
  • SDN Hub starter VM kit
