Chapter 7

Emerging Protocol, Controller, and Application Models

Abstract

Chapter 7 introduces new technology models which have become important in the realm of SDN in the last few years, examining new uses of protocols, new controller models, and new application emphases. In the area of protocols, we examine the use of NETCONF, originally used only for network management, as a mechanism for implementing SDN-based control of the network. We also examine the use of BGP, BGP-LS, and PCE-P to implement routing changes in a dynamic manner. New controllers such as ONOS and OpenDaylight have come to dominate many, if not most, SDN controller discussions, and we examine the capabilities and strengths of each.
