2.1 Introduction

The purpose of this chapter is to acquaint the reader with basic terminology and concepts needed to understand the measurement of incoming solar and infrared radiation. A methodology to calculate the position of the sun in the sky is described along with the specialized vocabulary and parameters employed in the calculation. The spectral nature of solar radiation, useful concepts relevant to heat transfer, and basic ideas required for understanding photodiodes are briefly discussed.
