2.1 Introduction
In order to conceive new photovoltaic energy-conversion schemes, improve existing configurations, develop and improve cell materials, and understand the origins of the technical and economic problems of solar cells, the basics behind photovoltaic device operation must always be kept in the forefront. With that in mind, an overview of the material properties and physical principles underlying photovoltaic energy conversion is presented in this chapter.
