Chapter 3. Installing Solaris
This chapter covers the step-by-step installation and selection of basic network configuration parameters, for both Solaris Intel and Solaris SPARC. Solaris has three methods of installation: command-line (text-based), interactive (menu-based), and Web Start (Java-based); I’ll walk you through the latter. In addition, I’ll describe the pre-installation and planning tasks necessary to select the correct networking parameters. You’ll also learn about common errors made when installing Solaris, and strategies for troubleshooting Solaris installations.
Pre-Installation Checklist
Installing a Solaris system is not as easy as ringing up your local computer retailer and ordering a desktop PC running Windows Me (or similar). A Solaris system is not typically used as a desktop PC; instead, installing a Solaris system is more fairly compared to selecting a PC server running Windows 2000, which may be responsible for managing hundreds of users’ files or dozens of different services. In that case, a PC guru would no doubt spend a considerable amount of time investigating various motherboard architectures and CPU types, as well as key hardware peripherals, such as SCSI cards that may manage RAID controllers, and other complex devices.
