Before introducing the security options available with NIS+, I want to make one thing clear:You should not use NIS if security is of any concern to you. The original NIS has no strong authentication, is not based on a strong security model, and therefore is insecure. If you need to use NIS, use NIS+. It is also necessary to note that I focus on NIS+ security here and not on NIS+ configuration or administration in general.
