1. Introducing ZFS File Systems

This chapter introduces ZFS, a new kind of file system from Sun Microsystems that is elegant in its simplicity, particularly in the way that you can easily manage data and storage. The ZFS file system is available in the following Solaris releases:

Solaris 10 6/06 release (ZFS root and install features available in Solaris 10 10/08 release)

OpenSolaris 2008.11 release (includes ZFS root and install features)

1.1 Overview of ZFS

ZFS is an all-purpose file system that is built on top of a pool of storage devices. ZFS doesn’t use a middle layer of virtualized volumes like other volume management products. This means you can easily aggregate your storage components with a few ZFS commands.
