kinit — Kerberos Login Command

Synopsis

/usr/bin/kinit [-ilrv] [username] 

Description

The kinit command is used to log in to the Kerberos authentication and authorization system. Note that only registered Kerberos users can use the Kerberos system. For information about registering as a Kerberos user, see the kerberos(1) manual page.

When you use kinit without options, the command prompts for your user name and Kerberos password and tries to authenticate your login with the local Kerberos server. You can specify the user name on the command line if you want.

If Kerberos authenticates the login attempt, kinit retrieves your initial ticket (that is, the ticket-granting ticket) and puts it in the ticket file specified by your KRBTKFILE environment ...
