whois — Internet User Name Directory Service
Synopsis
/usr/bin/whois [-h host] identifier
Description
whois searches for an Internet directory entry for an identifier that is either a name, such as Smith, or a handle, such as SRI-NIC.
The following characters preceding the identifier can modify the search.
. | Force a name-only search. |
! | Force a handle-only search. |
* | Search for a group or organization entry. The entire membership list of the group is displayed with the record. |
You can, of course, use an exclamation point and an asterisk, or a period and asterisk together.
