whois — Internet User Name Directory Service
/usr/bin/whois [-h host] identifier
whois searches for an Internet directory entry for an identifier that is either a name, such as Smith, or a handle, such as SRI-NIC.
The following characters preceding the identifier can modify the search.
|.||Force a name-only search.|
|!||Force a handle-only search.|
|*||Search for a group or organization entry. The entire membership list of the group is displayed with the record.|
You can, of course, use an exclamation point and an asterisk, or a period and asterisk together.
|-h host||Specify the name of the host to search.|
