Description
Booting (or bootstrapping) a system is the process of loading and executing a stand-alone program. Typically, the stand-alone program is the operating system kernel (see kernel(1M)), but you can boot any stand-alone program. For example, on a SPARC-based system, you can boot the diagnostic monitor as a stand-alone program.
