So now you have a nice digital SLR camera. It looks great, and you look great holding it. Does that guarantee that you’ll get great images? Unfortunately, no; that little detail is up to us. I’ve given you a few tips in the last section already; here I’ll go over the basics.

 

Understanding Aperture and Shutter Speed

Larger apertures (the lower numbers like f/1.8, 2.8, and 3.5) decrease the depth of field, making most of the image out of focus, and smaller apertures (the higher, larger numbers like f/11, 16, and 22) increase the depth of field, meaning that more of the image will be in focus.
