Sound Fields in Rooms

Physical measures of the sound fields in rooms are important because they can help us to understand the perceptual dimensions of speech, movies, and musical performances that we enjoy in those rooms. As in all psychoacoustic endeavors, not all physical measures are equally useful, however correct they may be in strictly physical terms. Also, a correlation does not imply causality, so although some measures may correlate with perceptions, they may not be the root cause of the effect. All of these measures form the foundation upon which the science of architectural acoustics has developed, and it is important to examine them even though some will turn out to be only of passing interest.
