Introduction

This chapter discusses the relationship of transportation to environmental purchasing. The relationship may be a very direct one. Purchasing often has input or even control of the transportation decision for inbound materials. In addition, purchasing affects the transportation footprint by determining which suppliers are selected, and thereby the location from which the required items are shipped. Purchasing also influences the transportation mode by determining the order size and how quickly the order is needed.
