The acoustics of monitoring environments such as listening rooms and control rooms, as well as consumer listening situations, is a large subject that could fill a whole book on its own (indeed it has done). In this book discussion is limited to considering the differences between two-channel stereo monitoring and surround sound systems, comparing the various international proposals that have been made for surround sound listening environments in particular. The issue of monitor system alignment is also touched upon, although it is recognised that this subject is the source of some disagreement at the time of writing.
