Understanding the UNC (Universal Naming Convention)

Windows 95 and most other network operating systems use a syntax called the Universal Naming Convention, or UNC, for addressing network resources. The syntax for the UNC is as follows:

\\SERVER\SHARE\DIRECTORY\FILE

Because most Microsoft operating systems offer both client/server and peer-to-peer networking capabilities, you must use naming conventions that are capable of addressing workstation as well as NT server resources.
