Introduction to Sites
Active Directory is truly an enterprise-scale directory service, and sites help provide this scalability. As discussed in earlier chapters, sites enable the administrator to control Active Directory replication traffic.
A site is a collection of IP subnets that share high-speed, reliable connectivity between DCs. I say domain controllers in this case because we are focusing on Active Directory and, in particular, replication. However, sites are also used for controlling client authentication traffic and the application of group policy objects. This chapter focuses on the replication aspect of sites and how they are utilized with regard to Active Directory replication.
