Understanding the X Window System
The X Window System is a powerful graphical operating environment that supports many applications across a network, and it can be freely distributed. The version of the X Window System discussed in this chapter is X11R6.4. However, Linux and XFree86 are constantly evolving, and a newer version of X may be available on the Net. In fact, at the time of this printing, work is under way to incorporate X11R6.5 into XFree86.
XFree86, the X server commonly used by Linux, is the X11R6.4 standard ported to Intel-based systems. XFree86 supports a wide range of standard PC hardware.
