Network Environments
You can have essentially two different network environments. The first is an NT server environment, in which one NT server acts as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC). The PDC and any Backup Domain Controllers act in a way that is similar to Network Information Services (NIS) masters and slaves; they also provide user network logons and grant permissions within the NT domain.

An NT domain has no relation whatsoever to the IP address domain that is normally referred to when networking IP is discussed. This text makes use of the term NT Domain to describe the Microsoft idea of a domain, and just domain, to describe IP networking.
